Author: EIS Release Date: Jul 9, 2020

Tsinghua Unigroup is to break ground on a DRAM fab this year, according the the Nikkei,

It will be China’s third venture into DRAM manufacturing.  Jinhua IC was abandoned when the US refused to send it equipment. Chanxin Memories, formerly called Innotron and before that called Hefei is said to have started production in Q4 but reported to be facing yield issues.

China’s memory efforts have been subject to announced targets that were never met and, curiously, frequent changes of name.

Tsinghua’s plan is to start DRAM production in 2022. According to the Nikkei, its budget is $110 billion over 10 years.

The plant will be built in the city of  Chongqing.

No one has divulged how Tsinghua will build DRAM without US-controlled manufacturing equipment or whether the US will let them have it.
