3-phase mains plus neutral filter for industrial machines

Author: EIS Release Date: Jul 30, 2019

Schurter is aiming at industrial machines with a family of three-phase-plus-neutral EMC filters.

Called Fmad Neo the family is “especially compact, the filter series is suited for use in today’s more portable industrial machines, designed to occupy less floor space in manufacturing plants”, said the firm.

Looking at the data sheet there are several case sizes between 110 x 91 x 157 (16A rating Case 5A-4) and 151 x 186 x 301 (230A rating Case 5D-95) – both at 50°C 300/520Vac 50/60Hz and including terminals and flanges. Nominal operating range is -40°C to 100°C.

There are two sub-ranges: ‘industrial’ versions (leakage <13mA) have the circuit above, while ‘low-leakage’ versions (leakage <3mA) omit three capacitors to the protective earth (on left in diagram).

Terminals are screw-type and the metal flange (with six fixing holes for symmetrical or asymmetrical screw mounting) is there to both support and provide the electrical earth connection.

They are ENEC and cURus approved and recommended for applications up to 520Vac.

“The filter family is also suitable for devices with high EMC loads,” said Schurter, identifying photovoltaic converters, battery storage, electric vehicle charging stations and motor inverters as potential applications.

Fmad Neo supplants the firm’s earlier Fmad filters. according to Schurter: “They offer at least identical performance with significantly smaller dimensions and weight.”
