1kV isolated voltage sensors meet IRIS for rail traction

LEM is aiming at rail traction and industrial applications with a series of isolated voltage sensors for ac, dc and pulsed use.

LEM-DVC-1000-voltage-sensor

DVC 1000 series sensors are panel-mount and measure 29 x 51 x 89mm – 131.6cm3– and 57g.  A DIN rail mounting adaptor is an option.

“LEM developed the DVC 1000 to be compliant with the International Railway Industry Standards [IRIS],” said the company. “The series uses an isolating amplifier with a safety insulation voltage of 4.2kV. The use of an isolating amplifier offers significant space savings over other sensors of similar capacity, which use galvanic insulation.”

LEM-DVC-1000-voltage-sensor-750Output is +/-30mA (DVC 1000) or +/-10V (DVC 1000-B) at +/-1500V peak. DVC 1000-UI is unipolar (0 to 1kVdc) with a 4-20mA current output. Measurement -3dB frequency is 35kHz. Response is in 12 to 17 µs at 90% of nominal voltage.

All models are specified to be +/-1% accurate at +25°C and +/-1.7% over -40°C to +85°C.

No primary power supply is needed. On the secondary side, consumption is 12 to 22 mA from dual +/-15 to +/-24V rails for DVC 1000 and DVC 1000-B models, or a single +15 to +24V for the unipolar DVC 1000-UI.

Materials comply with “all relevant fire and smoke requirements, EN 45545, mandatory in railway applications”, said LEM. “They are CE marked and are supplied with a five-year warranty, as are all LEM sensors.”

Devices are designed for

  • EN 50155: 2017
  • EN 50121-3-2: 2016
  • IEC 62497-1: 2018
  • IEC 61000-6-2: 2016
  • IEC 61000-6-4: 2016
  • IEC 61800-3: 2005
  • IEC 61010-1: 2010
  • IEC 61800-5-1: 2007
  • IEC 62109-1: 2010
  • UL 508: 2018

Expected applications include dc links in railway rolling stock and sub-stations, as well as the outputs of inverters, the input voltage of four-quadrant converters or the batteries of light rail vehicles. Away from railways, use is foreseen in DC power supply monitoring, electric vehicle chargers and battery storage.
