Small fanless Nvidia Arm PC packs a punch for AI

Author: EIS Release Date: Jul 29, 2020

Aaeon is aiming at edge AI with a box PC built around an Nvidia Jetson Xavier NX processor with a 64bit hex-core Arm processor, 384 Cuda cores, 48 Tensor Cores and two Nvdla engines capable of running multiple neural networks in parallel – delivering up to 21Top/s.

All this in a rather small box – 88 x 79 x 35mm.

Called Boxer-8251AI, it is designed to be rugged, and is fan-less to keep dust and other contaminants out for low-maintenance operation.

“One of the most innovative features of the Nvidia Jetson Xavier NX is the ability of users to select five different performance modes,” according to Aaeon. These modes allow users to tailor the number of cores, processor speed, and power draw the system utilises. Thanks to rugged thermal design, users are able to match processor performance with thermal performance for each operating mode.”

Mode    Power    Active cores    Max speed    Operation
1    15W    6    1.4GHz    -20 to 40
2    15W    4    1.4GHz    -20 to 40
3    15W    2    1.9GHz    -20 to 50
4    10W    4    1.2GHz    -20 to 50
5    10W    2    1.5GHz    -20 to 50

Power comes from a single 12V rail.

Along with the processor are 8Gbyte of LPDDR4 memory and 16Gbyte of on-board eMMC memory – expandable through a Micro-SD card slot.

I-o includes two COM ports and four USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, as well as Gigabit Ethernet.

“Boxer-8251AI is able to power a wide range of AI and edge computing applications from smart city environments to monitoring public transportation users for fever and compliance with face mask requirements,” said Aaeon director Alex Hsueh.
