China’s soaring renewables

In the last ten years China’ wind power electricity generating capacity grew 22x and its solar power capacity grew 700x, says the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Worldwide, in the same time-frame, the increase was 5x for wind and 33x for solar.

Last year, China accounted for about 30% of worldwide renewables. The US accounted for 10%.

Last year 10% of China’s electricity was generated by renewables. In 2030 thae plan is to have 30% generated by renewables.

China companies supplied 71% of the solar panel market in 2017. One time biggest producer of solar panels- Japan – was supplying only 2% of world solar panel production in 2017.

Two of the top five wind turbine makers are Chinese with a 22% market share.

Driving China’s thrust into renewables is its dependence on imports for 60% of its oil requirements.
