Barcelona-based BCN3D has announced a smaller version if its professional-grade Epsilon 3D printer, plus a filament conditioning cabinet.

Epsilon W27 has a 420 x 300 x 220mm high build volume (=27 litres) and has dual independent extruders (‘IDEX’) which means it can print two separate parts at the same time, or print parts using two different filaments – for adding water-soluble supports, for example.
The earlier Epsilon, announced last November, has a 50 litre build volume, and has been renamed Epsilon W50.
“With the Epsilon Series, BCN3D provides industrial power for the seamless daily operation of applications such as low volume production, functional end-use parts and manufacturing aids in the workbench segment,” according to the company.
The printer dual 2.85mm filament Bondtech extruders – these are dual gear tpes for improved filament grip.
Broadening filament compatibility, the build volume is enclosed and temperature-controlled (up to 60°C). Chamber heating is passive from the heatbed (rated up to 120°C) and print heads – active heating with separate heaters is still subject to patent uncertainty.
Standard filament types are PLA, PET-G, TPU 98A, PVA, ABS, PP and PA.
Then composite filaments including glass-filled PP GF30 and carbon fibre-filled nylon PAHT CF15 can be printed using the optional 0.6mm ‘Hotend X’ – standard nozzles are brass from 0.4 (default) to 1mm.
According to the company, it is developing profiles for other filaments including PLA Pro, rPET, TPU 85A (more flexible), BVOH, ASA and HIPS.
A safety interlock pauses motion when the door is opened, and a HEPA filter is included.
Overall dimensions are 690 x 530 x 750mm high.
Humidity controlled cabinet
BCN3D-Epsilon-W27-3d-printer-with-humidity-cabinet.jpgAt the same time, BCN3D announced ‘Smart Cabinet’, a humidity-controlled cabinet on which the new printer can stand, designed to remove moisture from reels of filament awaiting printing.
The cabinet also includes an uninterruptable PSU to protect print jobs from failing if mains power is removed.
Dehydration is through silica gel, which is automatically re-conditioned by a heater within the cabinet (away from the filament) once it is saturated.
Epsilon W27 will be available through BCN3D sales partners on October 19th, while the Smart Cabinet is scheduled to available from spring 2021. ‘Epsilon W27 SC’ is a bundle containing both.
There is a video (high on dramatic music and thin on content though).
Another video covers the firm’s new Sigma D25 open-chamber IDEX desk-top 3D printer which can print up to 420 x 300 x 200mm.
BCN3D raised €2.8m in July. The round was led by Group Mondragon, CDTI (Centre for Industrial Technological Development) and Danobatgroug.
