Car lighting – return of the ‘light bulb’, and other Osram LEDs at CES

Author: EIS Release Date: Mar 3, 2020

Osram is offering replaceable LED lighting modules to car makers.

Designed to the requirements of ECE standard R128, the hand-replaceable sources are available in red, yellow and white. They are branded ‘XLS’ for exchangeable LED light sources.

The parts are LR5, LY5 and LW5 respectively, with LR5 and LY5 intended for indicator and tail light light guides, LR5 also for stop reflectors and rear fog collimators, and LW5 for reversing lights implemented in indicator light guides.

The modern-day light bulbs will be on show at CES next week in Las Vegas along with several other automotive lighting technologies from the company including a rear combination light that adds extra information for other road-users, and infra-red lidar components – demonstrated within Rinspeed’s MetroSnap.

MetroSnap also gets the firms VCSELs (vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers) for in-cabin monitoring and Eviyos LEDs in its headlights – the latter illuminate the road and display visual warnings or symbols on the road.

Away from automotive applications, there will be LEDs for eye and gaze-tracking in augmented reality glasses, as well as for 3D room scanning, proximity detection and displays.

For health use, there will be emitters, detectors and modules for vital sign and heart rate monitoring on smartphones and smartwatches, as well as spectroscopic analysis of food. And there will be a top-light grow lamp from its Fluence division for horticulture.

Details of a home cinema projector LED, ‘Ostar Projection’, are due to be announced during CES.
