50W dc-dc converters work across 14 to 160Vdc

Author: EIS Release Date: Oct 11, 2022

TDK has introduced quarter brick isolated 50W dc-dc converters with a 12:1 input range: 14 to 160Vdc

There are also similar 75W converters, this time with a 9-75Vdc (8:1) input range,

Quarter brick converters (left hand in image), with smaller 20W parts as well as larger 200W parts in the pipeline (see below).

Called PYQ50, there are three 50W quarter brick versions, with outputs of 12, 24 or 48V.
Also part of the PYQ50 family, is a 30W maximum 5V output version.
Operation is with ambient air across -40 to +100°C, but derating starts at 20°C without forced air or a heatsink.
Input to output isolation is 3kVdc input to output, 2.5kVdc input to baseplate and 500Vac output to baseplate.
The 75W converters, PYQ75, has five members, with outputs of 12, 15, 24, 28 or 48V. Operation is with ambient air across -40 to +105°C, but derating can start well below 0°C.
Input to output isolation is 3kVdc input to output, 2.1kVdc input to baseplate and 1500Vac output to baseplate.
All are adjustable over a -20% to +15% range for non-standard voltages, and efficiency peaks at 90% within the range.

All also have over-current, output over-voltage and over-temperature protection, as well as remote sense and remote on-off.

Optional heatsinks facilitate convection cooling, forced air cooling, or the modules can be conduction-cooled using a cold-plate.

The quarter brick format is ~58 x 37 x 13mm and through-hole PCB-mount.

Silicone potting is there to resist shock and vibration, and is “beneficial for applications according to EN 50155, the standard for electronic equipment used on railway rolling stock vehicles”, said the company. “Applications also include industrial and measurement equipment requiring battery back-up or a dc source.”

Certification is to the IEC/UL/CSA/EN 62368-1, with the CE and UKCA marks for the Low Voltage and RoHS Directives. “The PYQ in combination with a typical test setup has been tested to meet the EN 50155, EN 45545-2, EN 61373, and EN 50121-3-2 railway standards”, added TDK.

In the pipeline is PYH200, a 200W half-brick family with the PYQ50’s 14 – 160Vdc input range, and the 20W PYD20 ‘2 x 1inch’ family, which has a remarkable 18:1 (8.5 – 160Vdc) input range.
