CES: TDK puts ‘smallest’ ASIL-B IMU into production

Author: EIS Release Date: Jan 10, 2023

IAM-20685 is the smallest ASIL-B-compliant monolithic 6-axis MEMS inertial measurement unit in production, according to TDK, and it was developed in compliance with ISO 26262 for automated vehicle parking, for example.

It “enables parking-assistance systems to determine the vehicle’s motion and vision systems to enable stabilisation techniques and improve image quality, and for positioning systems to enhance absolute position accuracy,” according to the company. The aim is to “to integrate in positioning, vision, and radar modules in order to enhance their performance when the satellites are not available, road vibrations are applied, and the tilt is unknown.”

Inside the 4.5 x 4.5 x 1.1mm 24pad QFN package (optional wettable flanks) are three gyros and three accelerometers, reporting 16bit acceleration and angular velocity.

Gyroscope full-scale can be selected from ±41 to ±1,966dps, and accelerometer full-scale from ±2 to ±65g.

Operation is over -40 to 105°C, and it also includes a pair of temperature sensors. Consumption is 10mA max.

Interfacing is over 10MHz SPI, with a CRC data integrity check.
