IO-Link interface option for small compression and tension sensors

Author: EIS Release Date: Jul 26, 2023

HBK has added an IO-Link interface option to its U9C (tension and compression, right) and C9C (compression only, below left) force sensors.

HBK U9C and C(C force sensors with IO Link
Described as miniature by the company, versions of the devices range across 50N to 50kN forces and are 26mm in diameter, except 46mm for the 50kN types.

They are available as just the sensing bridge in its cylindrical housing, or with a permanently-connected remote amplifier box (top right), and it is to the analogue output 0 – 10V or 4 – 20mA amplifier boxes that the ‘VAIO’ digital IO-Link output amplifier option has been added.

“Although digitisation is high on everyone’s agenda, it takes time and investment to implement,” according to the company. “It is therefore fitting that the U9C and C9C with IO-Link have an identical mechanical dimensions and threads to that of their analogue counterparts, making it easy to upgrade existing set-ups when the time is right.”

U9C types are pulled through threads of M5, M10 or M16x1.5mm

All the in-line amplifiers measure 50 x 26 x 40mm (plus connectors for the latter).

Internal sampling rate in the IO-Link version is 40kHz, and there is a 1ms minimum cycle time.

The device is ready to measure after being connected to an IO Link master, and output directly in Newtons without any adjustments.

“The properties of the sensor are not negatively impacted by the IO Link,” said HBK, adding: “Linearisation is possible” and that the digital versions are “more resistant to EMC interference than their analogue predecessors.”

Operation is over -10 to +55°C.

Applications are foreseen in fast peak force detection and in fast motion limit switches.
