Samsung launches PMICs for TWS (true wireless stereo) earbuds

Samsung has announced two “all-in-one” PMICs, MUA01 and MUB01, specifically designed for today’s true wireless stereo (TWS) devices.

Unlike wireless headphones, TWS earbuds have no wire that connects the two earpieces. tws

The MUA01 and MUB01 PMICs have been designed for the charging case and the earbuds respectively.

The devices reportedly integrate up to ten discrete components into one, including switching chargers and discharge circuits. At the time of writing, the firm has not made a data sheet available so the devices’ exact components are not known.

Samsung suggest that using the ICs, designers will be at liberty to allot more room to the battery for longer playback time.

The MUA01 supports both wireless and wired charging. For wireless, it supports the Wireless Power Consortium’s Qi 1.2.4, its latest wireless power transfer interface standard.

For power management, the device integrates a switching charger. It also comes with an MCU and eFlash, offering the option of modifying its firmware to support other applications.

With PLC support, the ICs can communicate with each other over charging pins.

This allows the charging case and earpieces to share information such as battery levels and whether the earpieces are inserted in the case.

“TWS earbuds present elevated listening experiences for more users and the trend is rapidly expanding the mobile accessory market, creating new opportunities for device manufacturers,” said Dong-ho Shin, senior vice president of system LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics.
