Intel CPU chiefs form AheadComputing

Author: EIS Release Date: Sep 9, 2024

Four CPU experts from Intel’s Advanced Architecture Development Group (ADDG) have formed a RISC-V startup called AheadComputing.

Debbie Marr, Mark Dechene, Jonathan Pearce, and Srikanth Srinivasan, who together have 80+ years of service at Intel, are setting out to create “compelling open specification core IP.”

Marr, the CEO, was an Intel Fellow and Chief Architect of the AADG;  Dechene was an Intel Principal Engineer and CPU Architect in the AADG; Pearce was an Intel Principal Engineer and CPU Architect in the AADG and and Srinivasan led the frontend and backend CPU teams at the AADG.

RISC-V startups have raised large sums recently – for instance Tenstorrent has raised over $500 million and Rivos has raised $250 million – but are not yet presenting a significant technical challenge to Arm.

A group like AheadComputing could prove a tempting acquisition for the superscalers attempting to build processors or, particularly, for AMD.
