President Trump and CC Wei announced another $100 billion investment by TSMC in Arizona at the White House yesterday, bringing TSMC’s total investment in Arizona to $165 billion.
“It’s going to create thousands of high-paying jobs,” said Wei’ “we are going to produce many chips to support AI’s progress and to support the smartphone’s progress. I want to thank President Trump again for his support.”
Trump was enthusiastic about Wei who he described as “a legend” and about TSMC which he called “the most important and most powerful company in the world” and about Arizona – “I like it because I won it,” he said.
“Without semiconductors nothing runs today,“ said Trump, “without semiconductors there’s no economy,“ adding that the TSMC investment, plus others in the US, would bring the US share of worldwide IC manufacturing to 40%. He said that TSMC’s new investment would add another 20,000 to 25,000 jobs in Arizona.
Wei said that TSMC would build three more fabs in Arizona and two more packaging plants.
The original $65 billion was to cover building three fabs: the first (pictured ) is already up and running 4nm wafers in Arizona with yields 4% better than those in Taiwan. The second is a 2nm fab currently under construction, and the third is planned to run 2nm and better processes by 2030.
