1.3kW at 28V with 96% efficiency, isolated

Vicor has hit 96% efficiency in an isolated regulated 270V-28V dc-dc converter with an output power rating of 1,300W – all in the company’s 142 x 36 x 9mm ‘Via’ package.

It is called DCM5614.

“Providing power density of 451W/in3 at a weight of 178g, the DCM5614 supports airborne, shipboard and UAV systems where power density, weight and efficiency are critical,” according to Vicor. “Modules can also be paralleled for increased power or stacked for increased output voltage.”

The input can range across 180 – 400Vdc and the output is 28V at up to 46A SELV (safety extra-low voltage) with 2.1kVdc isolation – and the output can be adjusted anywhere from 22 to 36V.

No-load consumption is 13W nomninal (27W max) and the shutdown figures are 1.6W nominal or 2.4W max.

Operation is with case temperatures between -40 and 100°C – with output derating somewhere above 75°C depending on mounting type.

Inside, both zero-current and zero-voltage switching are used, according to the company.

In-rush protection is included, and there are analogue or digital communication options – the optional secondary referenced PMBus-compatible telemetry and control interface provides access to the internal controller configuration, fault monitoring and other telemetry functions.

Other options are a choice of chassis or through-hole PCB-mount, and the thermal resistances of top and bottom surfaces are controlled to further increase mounting choice.

“When combined with downstream regulators and PoL current multipliers, the DCM enables power system architects to achieve power-system solutions with outstanding performance metrics and low total cost,” concluded Vicor.
